Kia has developed several useful technologies to assist drivers on the road ahead. From autonomous brakes to blind spot detection, Kia vehicles boast cutting-edge technology and strive to ensure the safety of everyone on board. Specifically, the Kia Park Distance Warning-Rear is a feature that Kia buyers don’t want to miss out on.

What Is Kia Park Distance Warning?

This feature works while the car is in both drive and reverse. Reverse Parking Distance Warning assists the driver when the vehicle is moving in reverse by chiming if any object is detected within a distance of 120 cm behind the vehicle.

How Does It Work? Reverse

The feature will activate when the car is on and in reverse. After starting the vehicle, a beep will sound once when the gear is shifted to R (Reverse) to indicate Reverse Parking Distance Warning is operating normally. If the car is moving at a speed faster than 5 km/h the warning assist might not function correctly. The sensory distance while the backup feature is on is approximately 120 centimeters from the central area of the rear bumper and 60 centimeters from the side area of the rear bumper. If more than two objects are detected at the same time, the first one will be recognized first by the system.

Different Distances Away From An Object

  • When an object is 60-120 centimeters from the rear bumper: Buzzer beeps intermittently
  • When an object is 30-60 centimeters from the rear bumper: Buzzer beeps more frequently
  • When an object is within 30 centimeters of the rear bumper: Buzzer beeps continuously

Non Workable Conditions

If moisture is frozen to the sensor the function might not operate correctly. You will have to wait for the moisture to clear. If the sensor is covered in another matter such as snow or the sensor is blocked, it will work properly again once the sensor is cleared. Uneven road surfaces could affect how the sensor operates. Phones or wireless transmitters have been known to interfere with the sensor so keep those items out of range. Towing a trailer will also affect the sensor’s performance.

Precautions

The sound of Reverse Parking Distance Warning may change depending on the speed and shape of the objects detected. The Reverse Parking Distance Warning may malfunction if the vehicle bumper height or sensor installation has been modified or damaged. To prevent damage, do not push, scratch, or strike the sensor.

Forward Parking Distance Warning

Forward Parking Distance Warning will operate when one of the following conditions is fulfilled:

  • The gear is shifted from reverse to drive
  • The gear is in drive and the parking safety button indicator light is on
  • Vehicle speed is below 10 km/h
  • Parking Distance Warning Auto On is selected from the settings menu and the gear is in drive

Precautions

  • Forward Parking Distance Warning does not operate when the vehicle’s forward speed is above 6 mph (10 km/h) even when the function is on (Parking Safety button indicator is on). Forward Parking Distance Warning will operate again when the vehicle’s forward speed decreases below 6 mph (10 km/h).
  • When the vehicle’s forward speed is above 18 mph (30 km/h), the Forward Parking Distance Warning will turn off (Parking Safety button indicator off). Although you drive below 6 mph (10 km/h) again, Forward Parking Distance Warning will not automatically turn on.

Conclusion

As you can see this driver assist feature is helpful. The driver will know how close they are to an object when backing up and going forward at lower speeds. Kia Park Distance-Warning is one of the many driver assist features that makes Kia unique and a brand favorite.
